A boyhood dream, 150 hectares of cork oak and a house that opened its doors.
Herdade das Onzenas de Cima was carved out of the great Onzenas property, fifteen hundred hectares in all. The family bought it in 1988 and, from 1995, gave it the life it has today: cork oaks, Lusitano horses and a house open to guests. It is still a working farm, where people come to stop.
The broodmares live in the water meadows and the colts stay out in the field until they are three; the fillies grow up on another estate, also until three, and only then begin their training. There is an indoor arena, an outdoor arena and paddocks with natural shade.
Guests are welcome to watch, to learn and — by prior booking — to ride. No rush, and no minimum level required.

On holiday with an uncle at the Herdade das Místicas, in Vimieiro, a boy falls for the countryside and makes himself a promise: “When I'm a man, I'll have an estate of my own!”
The family buys Herdade das Onzenas de Cima, occupied since 1975 and one of the four estates the great Onzenas property was divided into. Little by little, it comes back to life.
The project you still see today begins: the forest and the cork oaks, the breeding of Lusitano horses and the first beds for people from outside. The farm still works every day.
150 hectares, 8 places to stay and a working stud farm. Today the family owns close to 2,500 hectares of forest across the Ribatejo, the Alentejo and the Beira Baixa.
A farm with 150 hectares could fill itself with activities and timetables. We chose the opposite — and that choice is the difference between staying here and staying anywhere else.
There is no evening entertainment and no set programme. There is wind in the cork oaks, the pool at the end of the afternoon, and time nobody needs to fill.
The stud farm is not an attraction staged for guests — it is everyday work. Whoever stays here sees the real daily life of the Lusitanos.
A family atmosphere, breakfast with regional produce and whatever the vegetable garden gives, homemade cakes and meals in the open air. No hotel buffet: food is served and eaten as it would be at home, only with more people at the table.
